INJURY UPDATES

10-day and 15-day IL

LHP (left tibia stress reaction)
Expected return: Mid-July
Initially placed on the injured list with left calf tendinosis on May 14, a follow-up MRI on Lodolo taken earlier in the week revealed a more serious left tibia stress reaction. He is expected to be in a walking boot for at least two weeks and then undergo another MRI to track the progress. (Last updated: May 17)

RHP (right shoulder strain)
Expected return: May 26
Cruz, who traveled on the road trip to Miami and Colorado, left the club on May 16 to head to Louisville and throw live BP to the Triple-A club. Manager David Bell expected Cruz to have a couple of live BPs before beginning a rehab assignment there and likely get three outings. If all goes well, he could be on track to rejoin the Reds for their next road trip to Chicago and Boston in late May. (Last updated: May 16)

OF (left oblique strain)
Expected return: May 22
Friedl went out after injuring himself on a swing during a May 11 game vs. the Mets. Manager David Bell said everything would have to go perfectly for Friedl to return on the first day he’s eligible for activation but the club will also be cautious. He is expected to begin hitting off of a tee on Friday. (Last updated: May 15)

RHP (right ankle contusion)
Expected return: Likely early June
Legumina exited the Reds’ May 13 win over the Marlins after he took a comebacker off his ankle in the eighth inning. He was diagnosed with a right ankle contusion and will be out at least the full 15 days. An X-ray was negative, but the righty will undergo a CT scan to confirm. (Last updated: May 14)

60-day IL

RHP (low back stress fracture)
Expected return: Possibly end of May
Santillan was scheduled to throw live batting practice on May 16, but that was called off because of continued left hamstring soreness -- the latest of several setbacks he has endured. The right-hander, who is trying to return from a 2022 back injury, had his rehab assignment stopped in April after three appearances because of right knee discomfort, and he was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 28. The hamstring issue developed after that. (Last updated: May 17)

1B (left shoulder/biceps)
Expected return
: TBD
Votto was placed on the 60-day IL on May 15 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Matt McLain's callup, but it was not a sign that there was a setback. Bell said nothing had changed in Votto's status and he's still doing his work. The 39-year-old took live BP at Louisville over the weekend without issue. It was his first time facing pitchers since stopping a rehab assignment there on April 15. (Last updated: May 15)

RHP (right elbow strain)
Expected return: All-Star break
Overton began a throwing program recently and has been playing catch. While communicating with manager David Bell, he reported being encouraged by the progress he had been making. The club is being careful of how it's building Overton up, so he is not expected to get on a mound in the near future. His target return date is expected somewhere around the All-Star break in July. Overton was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 14. (Last updated: May 14)

LHP (left elbow stress reaction)
Expected return: TBD
Sanmartin left a relief outing on May 7 with a sore left elbow and landed on the IL two days later with a stress reaction. Manager David Bell said that Sanmartin will not throw for four to six weeks and will likely spend at least part of that time at the Reds' team complex in Goodyear, Ariz. Though there is not a set timetable after he begins throwing, Bell believes Sanmartin will be back later this season. Sanmartin was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 14. (Last updated: May 14)

RHP Vladimir Gutierrez (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Late 2023
Gutierrez began playing catch over the past week, per manager David Bell. Gutierrez underwent successful Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on July 20 and likely won’t pitch for the Reds until toward the end of the season, if lucky. Initially on the IL with right forearm tightness, he was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 7 after a setback two days earlier while he was pitching live batting practice and was later diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. RHP Tejay Antone (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2023
Antone recently began a throwing program at the team complex in Goodyear, Ariz., for the first time since he had a setback in February with a flexor strain in his right forearm. He has been working back from a second Tommy John surgery performed in 2021. (Last updated: April 25)

RHP Justin Dunn (right shoulder)
Expected return: Midseason
Dunn, who has endured shoulder issues each of the past two seasons, is experiencing pain in the subscapularis muscle in his right rotator cuff again. After seeing an orthopedic surgeon in New York, he has been shut down from throwing for a couple of months. He will not undergo surgery, but will use the time to let his shoulder heal.
